Why Coat a Concrete Driveway Instead of Sealing or Replacing It

Your driveway is the first thing anyone sees and the surface that takes the most abuse: two tons of car, hot tires, oil, Florida sun, afternoon storms and whatever grows in the shade. Here is what a polyurea system does that a sealer or a repour cannot.

Stops Spalling & Tire Marks

A bonded, non-porous surface that hot tires cannot peel and oil cannot soak into. The flaking stops because the concrete is sealed under the system.

Will Not Yellow in the Sun

The polyaspartic topcoat is 100% UV stable. Sealers chalk and epoxy ambers on an open driveway; this keeps its color.

Moss, Mildew & Rain

Nothing to soak into, so the green stops growing in the shady corners and the surface rinses clean with a hose instead of a pressure washer.

Fraction of a Repour

Resurfacing uses the slab you already have. No demolition, no hauling, no weeks of cure time, and it is done in a day.

Resurface, seal or replace?

Your Three Options for a Worn Concrete Driveway

Most Jacksonville and St. Augustine driveways we look at are structurally fine; the surface is just failing. That is the case resurfacing was made for. Here is how the three paths compare.

OptionWhat it doesDowntimeHow long it lastsBest for
Polyurea + polyaspartic coatingGrind, repair cracks and spalls, bonded multi-layer system with color and texture1 day, park on it in 24 hours15 to 20+ years, limited lifetime residential warrantySound slab with surface damage, stains, spalling, tire marks
Acrylic or penetrating sealerThin clear coat that soaks in or sits on top1 day1 to 2 seasons, then resealNew concrete you want to protect short-term
Standard epoxyRigid coating, usually with flake2 to 3 days, 3 to 7 to cure3 to 5 years outdoors, peels at tire linesIndoor floors, not driveways
Tear out and repourDemolish, haul, form, pour new slab1 to 2 weeks plus 28-day cureDecades, but it is bare concrete againHeaving, sinking or broken-through slabs only

Not sure which you need? The inspection is free. We check the slab for movement and moisture before recommending anything, and we will tell you if a repour is the right answer.

What Driveway Resurfacing Actually Involves

Resurfacing is not a coat of sealer over a dirty slab. It starts with industrial diamond grinding across the whole driveway to remove old sealer, paint, moss and the weak top layer of concrete, and to open the pores so the base coat bonds mechanically. Every crack, pit and spall is filled with a high-strength mender, and we moisture test the slab, because a Florida driveway that is wet underneath will blister any coating.

Then the system goes down: a 100% solids polyurea base coat, a full broadcast of decorative flake for color and traction, a scrape and level, and a clear polyaspartic topcoat with extra slip additive. One crew, one day.

Built for Northeast Florida Driveways

Jacksonville and St. Augustine driveways deal with things a coating catalog does not mention: salt air off the coast, afternoon thunderstorms that leave standing water in the low spots, oak shade that grows mildew, and sun that bakes the open sections at 120 degrees. Polyurea handles all of it because it flexes with the slab instead of fighting it, and the polyaspartic topcoat does not care how much sun it gets.

We color-match flake blends to pavers, stucco and trim, so the driveway, walkway and front steps can read as one finish, and we carry the texture up to the garage threshold so there is no lip and no bare strip.

Driveways, Walkways and Garage Floors as One Finish

The driveway is usually where it starts, and most homeowners end up carrying the same system onto the front walk and into the garage, because once you see the driveway done, the bare garage slab looks unfinished. We can color-match across all three and schedule them together, which is cheaper than three separate visits.

See our driveway coatings service page for the full system details, or our garage floor coatings if the garage is next. Poly Shield Coatings is based in St. Augustine and works across Jacksonville, St. Johns County, Clay County and Flagler County.

How it works?

Free On-Site Consultation & Precision Quote

One of our expert team members will meet with you personally to evaluate your driveway. We perform a comprehensive concrete inspection to check for moisture, movement and surface damage, then recommend the system that fits, or tell you honestly if the slab needs more than a coating.

Expert Prep & Professional Installation

Once you are ready to proceed, we schedule your project for a time that fits your lifestyle. Our crew performs industrial-grade surface preparation using diamond grinding and crack repair to ensure a flawless, permanent bond, then applies the coating system with precision, usually finishing in one day.

Aftercare Guidance & Lifetime Enjoyment

Upon completion, we provide a comprehensive aftercare briefing: when to walk on it, when to park on it, and how to keep it clean with nothing more than a hose. We also finalize the details of your limited lifetime warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is resurfacing a concrete driveway a good idea, or should I replace it?

If the slab is structurally sound, resurfacing is almost always the better call. Replacement means demolition, hauling, a new pour and weeks of cure time. A polyurea and polyaspartic coating goes over the existing concrete after we grind it, repair the cracks and spalls, and it is usually done in a day. Replace only when the slab is heaving, sinking or broken through, which we will tell you at the inspection.

2. What is the best coating for a concrete driveway in Florida?

A polyurea base coat with a polyaspartic topcoat. Polyurea is flexible, so it moves with the slab through Florida temperature swings and heavy vehicle loads without cracking. Polyaspartic on top is 100% UV stable, so it will not yellow or chalk in full sun the way epoxy does, and it resists oil, brake fluid and tire marks. Standard epoxy and acrylic sealers are not built for an outdoor driveway.

3. How long does a driveway coating last?

A professionally installed polyurea and polyaspartic driveway typically lasts 15 to 20 years or more. Acrylic sealers last a season or two, DIY epoxy a few years before it peels at the tire lines. The difference is prep: we diamond grind to clean concrete and moisture test before the base coat, which is what makes the long end of that range realistic.

4. Is polyaspartic good for driveways?

Yes, as the topcoat. Polyaspartic is the hardest-wearing, most UV-stable layer in the system and it cures fast, which is what lets us return a driveway to foot traffic in hours and vehicles the next day. It goes over a polyurea base coat that provides the flexibility and waterproofing.

5. Will a coating stop my driveway from cracking and spalling?

It stops the surface from spalling, flaking and staining, and it bridges hairline cracks because polyurea is flexible. It does not stop structural movement: a slab that is heaving from roots or sinking from washout needs that fixed first. We repair every crack, pit and spall during prep so they disappear under the finished surface.

6. Can I coat my own driveway with a DIY kit?

You can buy kits, but driveways are the hardest surface to DIY. The concrete must be mechanically ground, not just pressure washed, every crack repaired, and polyurea gives you 15 to 30 minutes of working time once mixed. Most DIY driveway coatings fail within a year at the tire lines. A professional install also carries a warranty, which no kit offers.

7. Is seal coating the same as a driveway coating?

No. Seal coating is a thin acrylic or penetrating sealer that soaks into the surface and wears off in a season or two; it is maintenance, not a finish. A polyurea and polyaspartic coating is a bonded, multi-layer floor system with color, texture and a hard topcoat that lasts 15+ years. If you are tired of resealing every year, a coating is the way off that cycle.

8. How much does it cost to coat or resurface a concrete driveway?

Every driveway is different in size, condition, existing coatings and access, so every job is quoted after a free on-site inspection. Contact us and we will give you a precise number, not an estimate range.
